Definition of Adjective- Grammar tips for competitive exam


 Adjective
Adjectives are describing words that qualify or add something to the meaning of a noun or pronoun.
·        The lazy dog sat on the rug.
·        Raksha has little affection for his cousin.
Types of Adjective
Adjectives have been divided under two broad heads-
1.     Describing Adjective
2.     Determining  Adjective
             Describing Adjectives describe two ideas-
Quality – it is the answer of what kind of
Colour – it is the answer of what colour
Describing Adjectives-
Adjective of quality – It show the kind or quality of a Person or thing.
1.     He is old not young.
2.     His thoughtless actions harmed him.
Proper Adjective Proper adjectives are derived from Proper nouns and are written capital letters.
India – Indian, America – American, Shakespeare – Shakespearean
They are used attributively before Nouns.
1.     The revolution which took place in 1917 was Russian.
2.     I have a liking for American Literature.
Determining Adjectives – Since determining Adjective or Determiners are very few; adjective is generally called a describing word.
Possessive Adjectives – Possessive noun is a form of Possessive Adjective. Possessive Adjectives are My, Our, Your, His, Her, Its, their.
1.     Sing Your Song again, it was very sweet.
2.     They boarded the train without their tickets.
Interrogative Adjective - Interrogative   Adjectives are used before nouns to ask questions.
1.     What present do you want?
2.     Whose work was liked by all?
Adjective of Number – they are also the same as numerical pronouns. Which denotes exact numbers?
1.     Water from Seven rivers invoked on scared occasions.
2.     Of these story books you may take any one.
Quantitative Adjective – Quantitative Adjectives are always indefinite and always singular.
1.     He left no juice in the glass.
2.     After serving in a big firm he has earned a lot of money.

Rules Related to Pronoun
Ø We need subject pronoun when the pronoun is the subject of the sentence.
·        They will definitely come.
·        Here they are the subject of the sentence.
Ø Possessive Pronouns indicate ownership and never need apostrophes.
·        The beautiful house is mine.
Ø Reflexive Pronouns, should be used only when they refer back to another word in the sentence.
·        The host himself received the guests.
Ø Pronoun is basically Personal Pronoun. In Conversation, we use 1st person for the speaker and second person for the listener. Object Pronouns are used when the Pronoun is the object of the sentence.
·        Kavita talked to him.
·        John bought a gift for her.
Ø If we use 2 or 3 persons in one sentence then we arrange them like 2nd, 3rd, 1st means we use 1st person last in the sentence.
·        You, he and I are fast friends.
·        You and I must go there.
Ø Each other is used for 2 persons, and ‘one another’ is used for more than two persons.
·        Parmeet and Randhir love each other.
·        These children love one another.

Exercise related to Pronoun 
1.     It is me who can help you?
Correct- It is I who can help you?
2.     I have resigned to my fate.
                   Correct-I am resigned to my fate.
3.     He took his younger brother with himself.
                   Correct- He took his younger brother with him.
4.     Let Arun and I struggle with this problem.
                   Correct- Let Arun and me struggle with this problem.
5.     This is the same pen which I gave you.
                   Correct- This is the same pen as I gave you.
6.     Myself did this work.
                   Correct-I myself did this work.
7.     One should do his duty.
                   Correct- One should do one’s duty.
8.     Such boys who are careless suffer in their life.
                   Correct-Such boys as are careless suffer in their life.
9.     I, You, and he are fast friends.
                   Correct- You, he and I are fast friends.
10. The person which wins prize brings honor to his school.
                   Correct-The person who wins prize brings honor to his school.

Definition of Pronoun- Banking exam Preparation notes on English


Pronoun

A Pronoun is defined as a word which can be used instead of a Noun or it is word or forms that substitute for a Noun.
  1.          The Spider is making their cobweb.
  2.          The person, who wins prize, brings honor to his school.

Kinds of Pronoun

Personal Pronoun- A personal pronoun which denote an entity of a specific person or thing.
Some personal pronouns are given – My, we, you, he, she, their, them etc.

These are of two types-

Subject Pronouns Subject pronoun means that the person in the sentence is acting as the Subject.

  1.          I like to eat chips, but she does not.
  2.         When he was young, he earned his living as a labor.

Objective Personal Pronoun Object pronouns indicate that the person or thing is the object of the sentence or clause.

  1.          Jyoti likes me but not her.
  2.          After reading this paper Ankur threw it into dustbin.

Possessive Personal Pronoun Possessive Personal Pronoun is used to indicate possession and defines who owns a particular object or person.
  1.          He is arranging his school bag.
  2.          I am starting my work.

Demonstrative Pronoun - Some pronoun points to someone. They are called Demonstrative Pronoun. They point to near or far nouns, one or many nouns.
  1.          That is dark cloud.
  2.          These are your achievements which we shall praise.

Distributive Pronoun- Distributive Pronouns are used to refer persons or things one at a time.
  1.          Each of women received the reward.
  2.         Either he or she can go.

Indefinite pronoun It refers to general categories of people or thing. It replaces nouns that are not specified.
  1.          Anyone can do that.
  2.          Somebody has stolen his gift.


Relative Pronoun Relative Pronoun refer back to people or things previously mentioned.
  1.         Those, who obey their parents, rise in life.
  2.          Poor people, whom no one cares for, live-in slums.


Interrogative Pronoun these pronouns are used to ask questions.
Interrogative Pronoun as Subject-
  1.   Who said that “Swaraj is my Birthright”
  2.    Which of these questions is the easiest?

Rules related to Noun

Ø In English language There are some nouns which ends  in( –s) and the same form can function as a singular and a plural noun as well.Some of these words are Alms , Species , Means , Series etc.

·         The Airplanes   are the fastest  means of transport.
·        Which are your favorite TV- series?

Ø Nouns with a singular form but have a plural meaning. These are Government, Audience, Team, Crowd, Family, Group etc.

·        Budha’s family was against with their  views.
·        Government made rules for women security.

Ø Some Nouns in English seem to have a plural form but infact they have a singular meaning .Some of these words are News , Riches , Mums , Scissors  Spectacles etc.

·        Riches have wings.
·        Billiards is very famous game.

Ø There are also some nouns which only have plural form and , consequently are followed by a plural verb. Many of these are used with the phrase a pair of as they refer to something made up of two parts.

·        These are scissors are for cutting papers.
·        She badly needed  clothes , so I gave a suit to her.

Ø Some nouns which ends in (-ics) can take both a singular(if they are considered as the name of the Science) or a plural verb(if they express a specific application of Science) Some of these words are Mathematics , Economics , Politics , Acoustics , Rhetorics , Gymnastics.

·        Economics teacher was very strict.
·        Acoustics is the study of sounds.

·        Can we rely on these informations.

         Correct- We have an urgent piece of business.
